Applying Conflict Transformation in Cyprus - New research published

After extensive research, FOYA Cyprus President, Demetrios Nicolaides, has published his findings on the use of neo-functionalism as an instrument of conflict transformation in Cyprus.

The paper applies the concept of conflict transformation with respect to the Cyprus dispute. It suggests a model to allow self-realisation for both communities, while at the same time providing a forum for the collaboration and/or unity of both communities. All efforts thus far to reach a settlement to the Cyprus problem have ended in failure. Although the idea of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation (BBF) is still the primary goal of both communities, the paper will argue that an alternative political settlement should also be considered. A failure in negotiations to re-unite Cyprus may lead to the perpetuation of the status quo into the indefinite future. However, there may be a third option to consider and this is explored in the idea of ‘unity in sovereignty’.

The paper was published in Vol. 23:1, Spring 2011, of the Cyprus Review.

The Local in Global Understandings of War and Peacemaking

The PRIO Cyprus Centre (PCC) together with PACSA (Peace and Conflict Studies in Social Anthropology) , cordially invite you to a conference entitled:

The Local in Global Understandings of War and Peacemaking:
Anthropological and Inter-disciplinary Perspectives

CHATEAU STATUS
NICOSIA 1-2 SEPTEMBER 2011

The conference will explore anthropological contributions to peace and conflict studies as well as to the study of violence in general. It seeks to underscore the relevance of bottom-up studies of conflict both within and beyond anthropology. Similarly, it will investigate how peace praxis and peace activism relate to political analysis, sociology, and philosophy. In combining these perspectives, the conference aims to reveal new potentialities in the re-conceptualisation of the ‘inter-disciplinarity’ of research on peace and conflict. It will provide participants with a unique opportunity to explore the comparisons between ‘their’ local sites and the protracted Cyprus conflict (attended by an equally protracted peace process) that reveals the blurred frontiers between peace, negotiations, conflict, militarization and war, and trans-national connections.
Note:
•	PRE-REGISTRATION is a must by sending an email to prio.guido@cytanet.com.cy no later than Wednesday 24th August

Home for Cooperation Opening

HOME FOR COOPERATION REINVIGORATES BUFFER ZONE WITH FOUR DAYS OF FESTIVITIES

The Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR) is delighted to announce the launch of four days of festivities to mark the inauguration of the Home for Cooperation - Educational and Research Centre, 6-9 May 2011. This celebration of a new shared space in the heart of Nicosia’s buffer zone will include musical performances, walks, sports events, art installations, performances and a symposium with distinguished academics.

Following a year of renovation work on a derelict house opposite Ledra Palace, the Home for Cooperation is now ready to open its doors. The idea behind the Home resulted from the efforts of the AHDR to create a shared space; an inter-communal, multi-functional venue in the buffer zone for Conferences and Exhibitions, Library and Archives, Research and Education activities and a workplace for researchers and organisations with a shared vision of cooperation.

This will be the first inter-communal building that promotes research and dialogue and issues regarding history education," explains Chara Makriyianni, President of the AHDR. “The Home for Cooperation will provide a common meeting place, where youth, parents, teachers, academics, researchers and activists can come together to discuss history, its teaching and learning, and gain knowledge of and from each other.”

The Home for Cooperation is the first centre in Cyprus to promote the collective efforts of civil society in engaging in historical inquiry and understanding and dialogue of ideas. As a landmark building located within the Ledra Palace crossing, the Home for Cooperation with its programs and partners aims to foster intercultural dialogue and understanding at a local European and international level.

For a complete programme of the 6-9 May Festivities, please see attached or visit: www.ahdr.info

Call for Papers

The Association for Historical Dialogue and Research and the PRIO Cyprus Centre Conference

Nicosia 14-15 October 2011

Shared Spaces and their Dissolution: Practices of Coexistence in Cyprus and Elsewhere

This conference aims to interrogate “coexistence” in Cyprus and other related cases and to ask what practices enabled centuries of cooperation and sharing, as well as how and when such sharing was disrupted. “Shared spaces” may be religious sites with meaning for more than one confessional group; the market, mine, or other site of economic activity; or the common space of the mixed village. Shared spaces may be characterized by political, economic, or social cooperation or antagonism. The everyday cooperative practices that enable the sharing of space may entail friendship or simple pragmatic accommodation. Moreover, the sharing of space may be altered by nationalist practices such as the renaming of sites, or it may continue unaltered even through episodes of violence. More importantly, daily interaction may be shaped by state policy, including more recent policies that encourage an understanding of coexistence as “social harmony.”

The conference organizing committee is interested in receiving historical or ethnographic analyses of particular sites, practices, or events that address the following and similar issues:

•	Theorizing the texture of everyday intercommunal relations pre-74
•	The “nationalization” of place and its effects on daily relations
•	Identifying dynamics of cooperation and conflict
•	Local histories of violence and its effect on the sharing of space
•	The effects of state policy on quotidian cooperation, including resistance to such policies
•	The way that a discourse of “coexistence” has become implicated in the conflict context
•	The effects of closed and/or open checkpoints on understandings of past coexistence

Although our immediate focus is on historical and ethnographic studies of coexistence in Cyprus, we are also interested in papers that address comparative cases with relevance for the island.

Please send abstracts of no more than 300 words before May 15, 2011 to Rebecca Bryant, rbryant2@gmu.edu

Conference organizers will work to provide travel costs for presenters coming from abroad but will prioritize graduate students and recent Ph.D. recipients.
Selected applicants will be informed by May 31, 2011.

Donate a chair for the "Home for Cooperation"

The Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR), is opening its Home for Cooperation (H4C) in May 2011 in the Nicosia (Ledra Palace) buffer zone. The H4C will operate as an education, dialogue and research centre. In order to enhance the Homes’ purpose and character, an experienced creative team are hard at work, planning the interior design of this multi-communal space. As well as a conference space, offices and library, the H4C will house a fully functional canteen. To make the canteen area that extra special, the H4C is asking for your contribution…… in the form of donating a chair! Contemporary, futuristic designed chairs, environmentally-inspired pieces, antique chairs, bright color chairs, rugged, gothic, Cypriot traditional rush seated chairs - anything you wish! The more eccentric the better.

The idea being that people provide the H4C with a chair which they feel represents the Home and as such, join together AHDR in this historical initiative. If you feel that you would like to contribute, please state your willingness in an email to the following address, stating the type of chair that you wish to donate: h4c@ahdr.info

The deadline for emails of interest is Friday 25 March 2011. The inauguration of the H4C will take place from 6-9 May 2011!

Cyprus' Application to NATO's Parternship for Peace

Earlier today the House of Representatives approved a resolution which called for Cyprus' membership to NATO's Partnership for Peace. Following the approval of this resolution, President Demetris Christofias announced he would veto the decision, as the House of Representatives does not have the authority to deal in foreign affairs.

FOYA Cyprus endorses the President's decision to veto this resolution and believes that Cyprus must be committed to progressing towards reconciliation and demilitarization.

FOYA Cyprus further believes that entry to NATO’s Partnership for Peace will only sustain or increase the level of militarization in Cyprus, making future demilitarization problematic.

Protest & Solidarity Gathering

This Saturday, February 12th at 11:00am, the United Teacher's Platform is organizing a show of solidarity for the Turkish Cypriots who have been protesting against provocative statements made by Turkish Prime Minister, Erdogan.

The below is an exerpt from the United Teacher's statement:

Protest and solidarity gathering

Saturday 12/02/2011 – 11.00 am

Our Turkish Cypriot compatriots continue with their popular protests the resistance to their current relation with Turkey and to the provocative statements by Tayip Ertogan. The atmosphere smells 2003 and reminds us the error of our side that did not embrace in practice the mobilisation then, thus leaving an opportunity to create a solution dynamic to pass away.

The second chance has arrived and as history shows, we need not just verbal support but intense and clear action in society that clearly sends the message that united and in solidarity Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots can coexist and live with dignity in their common country.

The time to get out in the streets and send the message to all directions that with our actions, we stand by the protesters, has come and it will not wait. No more games with time. Now is the time to refuse partition. Now is the time for the solution.

Let us get into the streets
to send a strong message of solidarity
to create a common front of action
to reunite Cyprus
to not miss another chance.

Call for Participants

THE AGE-OLD subject of the Cyprus problem is being approached in a novel way through a documentary by a young Cypriot film-maker, who’s calling on all politically conscious youth to take part in the independent film production to “share their views on Cyprus”.

“The documentary is about the process of reconciliation seen through the youth [of Cyprus],” said 27-year-old Danae Stylianou.

During the hour long feature film, a group of Turkish and Greek Cypriots embark on a four-day journey of discovery where they will visit places of “historical, religious and cultural significance” to both communities.

The selected participants - aged between 20 and 30 - will not only have the chance to take part in a culturally significant film but they will also be provided with free accommodation, food and transportation.

The deadline for applications is January 31. For more information call 99246008, or email sharinganisland@gmail.com
